UC Davis (20) vs. Stanford (17)
September 17, 2005 | Stanford Stadium (Stanford, California)
Jon Grant threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Blaise Smith with eight seconds remaining, capping a stirring 72-yard drive in the final three mintues, as UC Davis stunned Pac-10 member Stanford 20-17 in a nonconference football game played before 31,250 fans at Stanford Stadium.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Aggies, who lost their final two games of 2004 and their first two of 2005. Stanford, which beat Navy 41-38 in its opener, fell to 1-1.
UC Davis pulled off the amazing upset with a strong defensive effort that limited Stanford to just 192 total yards, key offensive plays that led to the winning touchdown, and huge fan support which numbered an estimated 10,000 persons in the UC Davis sections of the stadium.
The Aggies trailed 17-0 after the Cardinal scored an early field goal and a pair of defensive touchdowns. However, a special teams turnover led to the Aggies’ first score while another turnover by Stanford led to the second. After missing two field goals that would’ve tied the game, the Aggies found themselves with the ball on their own 28-yard line and less than three minutes on the clock.
Grant engineered an 11-play drive with a key 19-yard catch by Tony Kays giving the Aggies the ball at the 6-yard line in the waning seconds. After Grant ran to the three, he found Smith just inside the endzone at the right flag for the go-ahead score.
UC Davis outgained Stanford by nearly double and held the Cardinal to less than a 100 yards of total offense in the second half. Kays posted his third consecutive game of at least 12 receptions and 100 receiving yards, finishing with 10 for 115. Defensive end James Amos helped lead the defensive effort with 1.5 sacks and Grant threw for 251 yards while running for 41 more.
