In Loving Memory...
“There is no remembrance too long, that pays suitable tribute to a friend, or loved-one.”
I have always believed in “never forgetting” those that have made a lasting impression on my life, or those around me. I feel it important to acknowledge and pay respect to the athletic icons that have left their fingerprint on the development of Aggie Athletics. On June 27, 2006, UC Davis Athletics lost a man that left such an impressionable mark on not only the athletics program, but influenced so many students, and student-athletes on campus. Many friends and family had the opportunity to visit with Coach Herb, to recount fond memories of days spent at UC Davis, in the months preceding his death.
Herb was a strong influence
during his 35-years as a coach
and educator. His demeanor was always engaging, and his words sincere. He touched many faculty, students, and student-athletes during his tenure. Reflecting
their belief in the integrity of the UC Davis Intercollegiate Athletics and the role that it plays in the lives of scholar athletes, Herb’s wife and children have established the ‘Herb Schmalenberger Memorial Scholarship Fund,’ which annually recognizes an aspiring, young student-athlete best typifying his image of academic and athletics excellence. Herb joins his colleagues and friends on an esteemed list of endowments (see page 18) that you can support by contacting Executive Director for TeamAGGIE, Sharon Lynch at 530-757-3146, or emailing her at selynch@ucdavis.edu.
